School-in-a-Box: how a Miami church opens a funded school

A congregation with classrooms, a kitchen and a playground already owns most of what a hybrid school needs. The state scholarship supplies the revenue. Here is the operating model.

The model

A two- or three-day-a-week learning community on the church campus, with AmFaith as the academic core and the church providing supervision, community, chapel, sports and enrichment. Families enroll through PEP (hybrid rules: at least two in-person days plus a Student Learning Plan) or, for a full five-day school, through the Private School Scholarship.

Unit economics

At the Miami-Dade K-3 award of $8,745, a 40-student community generates roughly $350,000 of scholarship revenue a year before any family contribution. Core tuition to the online school is about $3,000 per student; the remainder funds the church's staffing, facility use and activities.

Compliance checklist

Annual private-school registration survey with FLDOE (five-day model), Level 2 background screening, health/fire/safety inspections, attendance records, scholarship-school registration with Step Up and/or AAA, a surety bond or letter of credit for schools under three years old, annual norm-referenced testing, and EMA enrollment submissions by the quarterly deadlines.

Youth and community layer

Trail Life, American Heritage Girls, Awana and Upward Sports are the usual partners for the non-academic hours; many Miami congregations already host one.
